Eight year old Kimberly Hudson discovers a world where dreams come true.  While rummaging through her grandmother's attic she finds a drawer full of small jars of different kinds of tea--some berries, some leaves--but all are magical, although she doesn't realize this at first.

It is only after drinking a mug of the berry tea that she realizes the stunning truth.  Invisible now, she scrutinizes the jar and finally reads the tiny label on the bottom that explains the berries are only for emergencies and those who believe in magic.  Kimberly is a believer.

Chapter 1 Page 1 excerpt

Eight year old Kimberly Hudson turned over and opened her eyes, as the first fine rays of dawn came creeping softly into her room from the window beside her bed.  A smile lifted the corners of her mouth.  A sunny day was a perfect day to explore.  Another day filled with adventure.  A day that would suit her just fine, thank you very much, no matter what her brothers thought.

It was the family's second week at her mother's old family home.  They came to visit Kimberly's grandmother and explore the tiny town of Shelby on the southern coast of California for the first time since she'd been born.

Yesterday, to her delight, Kimberly found treasure in the cluttered, dusty attic.  Once she talked her mother into letting her explore the rambling upper section of the three-story house, she spent the day opening old steamer trunks, trying on antique cloths from the early nineteen hundreds, opening lacy parasols, and reading yellowed love letters.  Sweet letters her grandfather had sent her grandmother.

Kyle and Scotty, her younger brothers, were not interested in a bunch of “dusty old junk”, so Kimberly had the attic all to herself, which proved to be a very good thing indeed.

Kimberly drinks three cups of the magic tea and is disappointed when she sees no change when looking into a mirror. She falls into a large trunk and out the bottom. Surprised, she lands on lush green grass next to a loch in Scotland--Loch Ness--where she meets the "Monster".

Chapter 1 Page 1 excerpt of NESSY

“Well, bummer. I can still see you, and you haven’t shrunk even a little bitty-bit. Flap your arms and see if you can fly,” Kyle urged his sister Kimberly.

“Oh, for goodness sakes wait a minute.” She stood and walked to the large mirror. “Huh, I guess you’re right. Nothing’s changed. I look just the same as before I drank the tea.”

“Yeah,” Kyle agreed. “But you didn’t flap your arms—try that.”

Kimberly held her arms out at shoulder height and waved them up and down. Disappointment clouded her face. “Darn, I couldn’t even lift an inch off the ground. I guess you’re right, this tea isn’t magic.”

“Well, since it isn’t magic I’m going out to see if our fort is still there, ‘cause I don’t like plain old tea. Come on Scotty.”

“Yeah, I don’t want mine neither, ‘cause I hate plain old tea!” Scotty grumbled. “You comin’ out with us?”

Hands on her hips, Kimberly glanced from the boys, on their way to the ladder that would take them down to the second floor of the house, and then back to the two mugs of tea they hadn’t touched.

“No, not now. Guess I’ll stay here and look in that other old trunk.” Sounding disappointed as the boys, she pointed to a steamer-type flat bottom trunk in a dim corner.

“Well, if you change your mind, we’ll let you help with the fort,” Kyle generously volunteered.

“Yeah, help with the fort,” Scotty repeated Kyle’s words, as he almost always did when they reached the stairs.

“Okay, maybe later. Bye.” She waved them away.

“Bye.” Both boys noisily climbed down the ladder.

Kimberly turned to stare at the last trunk to be investigated, wondering if she’d have more fun with Kyle and Scotty at the fort.
